The majority of severe lower back pain, whether it is on the right or left side of the back, is caused by problems with the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, starts in the lower part of the spinal cord proceeds downward through the butt, and down the back of the legs to the feet.
When the sciatic nerve has pressure placed on it, it can cause the back pain, (commonly referred to as sciatica) which at times can be severe and debilitating. It can be on the right or left side of the back and sometimes both sides. It can be localized in the lower back but, the majority of the time it radiates downward through the buttocks and down the back of the legs.
Lower back pain due to sciatic nerve problems, are normally because of problems with the sciatic nerve. The two most common, hurt discs in the spinal column, and a hurt or bruised Piriformis muscle. For those who do not know what the Piriformis muscle is, it is the muscle that attaches at the lower back and then attaches to the thigh bone. If this muscle becomes hurt, then swells from inflammation, it will place pressure on the sciatic nerve thus, causing the severe pain you feel. (The sciatic nerve runs under this muscle.)
Most people, when the back pain is severe and debilitating, will tend to try many different positions to sit or lay in to try and ease the pain, or (as I did for many years) lay on a heating pad to ease the pain. When the pain first flares up, it is because of inflammation, heat only causes more inflammation, it feels excellent while applied because the heat numbs the pain receptors which send signals to the brain. Once the heat is removed, the pain is worse because the heat worsened the inflammation.
Taking small walks when sciatica is being caused by problems with discs in the lower back, can be more beneficial than sitting. Sitting positions compress the spine which will place more pressure on the sciatic nerve causing more pain. Inflammation and swelling of the sciatic nerve will occur with both. Condition, hurt discs in the lower back, as well as a hurt Piriformis muscle. The pain from both conditions can be severe as well as debilitating, in addition, the pain will get worse as the inflammation and swell increase.
There are things you can do to get relief from lower back pain that you can do at home that will not only rid you of the pain but, will also keep it from returning.
